Routine maintenance and extensive engineering works undertaken on Neumann, Scully and Lyrec cutting systems.
Servicing of associated tape, processing and monitoring equipment along with high end Hi-Fi tech. New components manufactured for cutting systems and their amplification.
Latest developments include a first edition pitch computer and drive & upgraded SAL74B amplifier cards. VMS80 Pitch motor remanufactured and Turntable tachometer remanufactured.
During ongoing development, an in house highly modified Neumann system offers solid state & valve lacquer cutting.
A wide range of specialist past work from compact amplifier design, restoration of valve tape systems to large format analog consoles.
Specialising in the repair and servicing of classic microphones, outboard equipment and valve pre/amplifiers.
Commonly servicing Neumann, SSL and Neve consoles. Nut & Bolt Restorations include Neumann SP transfer desk, EMI TG Console & Neve VR3.
Photographs of recent disc mastering & studio electronics projects
Intricate rebuild of a 1954 Lyrec SV8 valve operated lathe, involving a redesigned pitch system for improved reliability.
An ex-Abbey Road console of the late 60's; on which the now sought after preamps, EQ's and Zener limiter on all 24 channels needed extensive work.
Photographed here with Frederic Stader of Music Matters Mastering, undertaking of an international install of a VMS70 & SAL74B.
Restoration of a late model VMS80 lathe and its SAL74B amplifiers after a catastrophic flood. All cards stripped and rebuild along with mechanical repairs to both motor systems.
Usually working on a plethora of U87's, 67's and M49's, an interesting project maintaining originality while achieving a low noise floor and better capsule response
Grid supply issues led to the untimely rebuild of this early VMS80. Completely restored with no expense spared, it is now an exceptional example with expanded functionality including my auto echo card and custom amplifiers.
Built for Masterlink Productions, an esoteric 990 footprint discrete amplifier with passive filters and switchable loads. The development of the opamp resulted in a few designs which have since been used in other projects.
This early VMS-70 originated in a damp, warm climate and had water damage to its power supply. The SAL A rack was long overdue service. Newly designed amplifier PCB's along with rebuilt N & P cards resulted in an excellent system.
A very original example of a Jupiter 6 which required a full overhaul, mould treatment and extensive repairs to the keybed. Many Jupiter 6 and 8 units are undertaken, with synthesiser works stretching to CS-80's and Waldorf's.
As part of the SV8 cutting system, this TR8 contains both tape playback, preview and all associated tape and cutting amplifiers. The EL34 based amplifiers required regular intervention and have been rebuilt with hifi components and silver connections throughout.
One of my earlier projects, a DCA Studer A990 Console was restored and modified for a modern studio workflow. It is a late broadcast design with an extremely clean signal path. The recall system has also been modified and reinstated.
Leaning on years of technical knowledge of valve based systems, a pair of Faircild 660's were painstakingly rebuilt and refinished - soon followed by two 670's for use in a cutting system.
Long term projects (and only transportation). If ever late, this is why!
Meet Maggie.
Of all the wonderful albums cut this year, the Neil Cowley Trio's LP 'Entity' is consistently on at home. A musical triumph and shines on vinyl despite long sides.
